Tesla Model S: Wiper Blades - Adjust

If the wiper blades streak or chatter during cycling, perform the following:

  1. Use the touchscreen to set the wipers to Service Mode.
  2. Clean the wiper blades thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol wipes or equivalent.
  3. Clean the windshield thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol wipes or equivalent. Check that the windshield has no dirt, residue, commercial coatings, etc.
  4. Spray the windshield with the washer jet.
  5. Cycle the wiper blades on high. If streaking or chatter persists, complete the following procedure or procedures that address your issue.

Perform the following if:

  • Streaking persists on either wiper blade
  • Chatter persists on the driver's-side wiper blade
  1. Open the hood.
  2. Remove the affected wiper blade (refer to procedure).
  3. Close the hood.
  4. Check that the measurement plate on the wiper arm adjustment tool rotates freely in its setting. If it does not, lightly loosen the plate screw using a Hex tool.
  5. Loosen the adjustment pin on top of the wiper arm adjustment tool.
  6. Slide the tool onto the end of the exposed wiper arm. Caution: The end of the wiper arm can scratch the glass. Make sure it does not make contact with the glass.
  7. Remove the cloth from underneath the end of the wiper arm.

  8. Tighten the adjustment pin to secure the tool onto the arm. Make sure both points on the plastic sit on the windshield.

  9. Check that the arm is within specifications:
    • LHD vehicles: -6 +/- 4 degrees
    • RHD vehicles: +6 +/- 4 degrees
  10. If the arm is not within specifications, set an open-ended wrench (24 mm) onto the tool and adjust the arm until it is within specifications.

  11. Remove the tool from the arm.
  12. Reinstall the wiper blade (refer to procedure).
  13. If streaking or chatter still persists, replace the wiper blade (refer to procedure).
Perform the following if chatter persists on the passenger's-side wiper blade:
  1. Spray the windshield with the washer jet.
  2. Cycle the wipers on high.
  3. Check to see if the wiper blade is striking the cowl while in motion.
  4. Turn off the wipers.
  5. Check to see if the wiper blade sits below the L-shaped windshield mark.

  6. If the wiper blade either strikes the cowl or sits below the windshield mark, remove the wiper arm and reinstall it in a higher position (refer to procedure).
  7. If chatter still persists, replace the wiper blade (refer to procedure).
