Tesla Model S: Steering Wheel (Remove and Replace)
Removal
- Remove the driver's air bag (refer to procedure).
- Position the wheels straight ahead. Mark the steering wheel
relative position to the column.
- Remove and discard the bolt that secures the steering wheel to
the column (torque 80 Nm).
- Remove the steering wheel.
- Tape the clockspring cassette to prevent rotation.
Installation
Installation procedure is the reverse of removal, except for the
following:
- Remove the tape and ensure that the spring loaded pin is in the
clockspring slot when installing steering wheel.
- Install a new mounting bolt.

Remove the driver's side lower dash trim (refer to procedure).
Remove the steering controller modul
Warning: If the vehicle
has air suspension, activate "Jack" mode on the touchscreen before
raising and supporting the vehicle.

Jacking Procedure
Follow the steps below to lift Model S. Ensure that any
non-Tesla repair facility is aware of these lifting points.
1. Position Model S centrally between the lift posts.
2. If your Model S is equipped with air suspension, it
automatically self-levels, even when power is off (see

To open the rear trunk, ensure Model S is in Park, then
do one of the following:
Touch Controls > Trunk on the touchscreen.
Double-click the rear trunk button on the key fob.
Touch the rear trunk button on the mobile app.
Press the switch located under the liftgate's exterior
