Tesla Model S: Subframe Assembly - Front (Remove and Replace)

Tesla Model S (2012-2025) Service Manual / Chassis / Subframe Assembly - Front (Remove and Replace)

Removal

  1. Remove front subframe assembly for access (refer to procedure)
  2. Remove and discard the bolts (x2) securing steering rack assembly to subframe (torque 175 Nm).

    Caution: Replace all Patchbolt(s).

    Caution: Ensure that the bolts are torqued in the correct sequence during reinstallation.

    Subframe Assembly - Front (Remove and Replace)

  3. Remove steering rack assembly from front subframe.
Installation

Installation procedure is the reverse of removal, except for the following: When reinstalling the bolts that secure the subframe to the steering rack, follow this sequence:

  1. Tighten the LH bolt to 30 Nm.
  2. Tighten the RH bolt to 30 Nm.
  3. Fully torque the LH bolt to 175 Nm.
  4. Fully torque the RH bolt to 175 Nm.

    Removal Remove the front aero shield panel (refer to procedure). Remove and discard the inner bolts (x2) that secure the skid bar to the front subframe (10 Nm).

    Removal Remove the LH underhood apron (refer to procedure). Remove the RH underhood apron. Remove the retainers (x2) that secure the underhood apron. Carefully release the clips (x7) that secure the front underhood apron to the slam panel.

     Setup

    Warning: Only technicians who have been trained in High Voltage Awareness are permitted to perform this procedure. Proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and insulating HV gloves with a minimum rating of class 00 (500V) must be worn any time a high voltage cable is handled. Refer
